White Lake Chorale

February 28, 2011

Good afternoon everyone~ Walt was right on top of things and finished his quote by Wednesday morning, I had things lined up ready to write, and my internet device decided it was time to quit! I had suspected such, with the intermittent difficulty I was having so I ordered a new one from Verizon, wireless this time. Piece of cake, they said. LOL Well, it arrived Thursday but with the arrival of a stuffy head, a cough that is so deep it hurts, and knowledge I had likely been blessed with the crud again, I started following the directions as given with my foggy brain. Friday, slept most of the day BUT...I did call Verizon in late afternoon and together we tried, first on my laptop. Four technicians and one hour and 25 minutes later, it was up and running! LOL! Next I tried to do the same with the desk top, but that wasn't working at all! Got the device that was recommended, but it wasn't until I brought in my tower to the gentlemen at Radio Shack on Saturday afternoon that everything begin to function as it should. AH...don't we just love electronics sometimes Very sorry, but thanks for your patience...

Quote from Walt: "Totally awesome news! We have 40 women in the chorale!!! Bad news we have 5 seconds...this is a problem. We have never had to have auditions, and I do not want to have them, but we need more women to sing second...specifically more sopranos. HELP ME OUT PLEASE...we need a few more sopranos to sing second. So hopefully we will have SEVERAL volunteers to sing second...so the director does not need to choose. From your loving director."

Welcome!

Welcome to two new members:

Diane Marino, Soprano

Denise Fishell, 1st Alto/2nd Soprano

Welcome Back to:

Meg Eaton, Soprano

Rehearsal Notes:

Singing in the Rain:

· Watch your breaths' measure 32, 85 no breath in between laughin, heart;

· beware of the rest on page 13, measure 98 good place to take a breath;

· Sopranos, you don't want the second word to stick out loudly. That high D will stick out, needs lots of control

· Don' t slide into your notes. Got to get on a chord to make it a full, rich chord

Another Opnin Another Show:

· One thing about Broadway, if you don?t get every word in a song, they aren?t going to know what this is about. Words are front and center, not about a wonderful, rich tone.

· Keep things forward. Don?t let your voice resonate in your chest. Gets in the way of getting the message across.

· Sopranos and Altos, concentrated on measure 49-51 and 57-59, keep it light.

· Measure 101: smooth it out, Tenors and Basses, and just accent lightly on the first beat.

· Look over measures 93-116

You?ll Never Walk Alone:

· Went through this piece to page 9

Women were excused at 8:30. Men stayed to go through two of their three selections.

Hmmm...How many 4 Piano Concert Tickets???

A Piano Extravaganza? tickets will be available to the general public on Monday, March 14, so we want to make sure we get seats for our Chorale members, pianists, their guests, etc., first!!!

By March 7th, I would like to know how many tickets you would like for your friends and family members and which day they wish to come. I will also take them on the 14th. The tickets guarantee availability of a seat for them and are considered??promises to attend?. (You will be able to get additional tickets if you need them, I just can?t promise that seats by you will be available.)

Like last time, you will be placed in an aisle seat with your guests so it will be convenient for you to get to the stage. We will sing at least three selections this time, so it should be a fun experience for all.

Start asking your friends & family members when they?d like their tickets. We want to make sure we get your fans and loved ones seated to enjoy your performance(s). PLEASE don?t forget to count yourself! LOL

THANKS bunches!

Bring a Friend or Family Member to Chorale!

Several people have brought in friends or people they sing with in their own church choir. Look around and see if you see someone who might enjoy singing with the Chorale and invite them along. They are welcome to just attend a rehearsal and check it out!

White Lake Chorale
January 23, 2011

Hello everyone,

Walt will not be returning for Monday's rehearsal...it is cancelled.

He will remain with his family member on the other side of the state.
Hospice has been involved and shared that it is only a matter of time...passing could be as early as tonight or tomorrow.

If it is something you wish to do, please keep him and his family member in your thoughts and prayers.

Walt, our thoughts and love are with you and your loved ones during this difficult time.

Thanks everyone...I will be in touch this week.

Donalee

 SPRING CONCERT DATE CONFLICT:

Repeat from Walt:  "It has come to our attention that the date I chose for the spring concert conflicts with the National Band Convention Concert which the West Michigan Concert Winds is hosting. So it looks like we will need to change our date. I want to make sure we support the West Michigan Winds and its players. WE NEED TO CHOSE A NEW DATE SOON...so bring your calendars to our first rehearsal.

...and ALWAYS know that you can contact me with any concerns or questions!"  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

First Rehearsal, Monday, January 24:

We will be meeting again on Monday evenings from 7:00-9:00 pm at Lebanon Lutheran Church starting on the 24th.
I hope that some of our members who were unable to be with us for the Christmas season will be able to join us this time.  I have only heard from one or two, so I am assuming everyone else is returning....HURRAY!!!!

ALSO:  If you know of anyone who might be interested in joining the Chorale this session, please invite them to join us for our potluck and/or the first rehearsal.  What a comfortable way to get acquainted!

“Warm Welcome” Potluck 6:00-7:00 pm Monday, Jan. 24

It’s time to start this new season with a warm opportunity for food and socializing and we hope you will consider joining us.  We’ll provide the paper products, utensils and beverages.  Please bring a dish to pass.  (if you are new to the Chorale, you do not have to bring a dish unless you choose to since we are welcoming you too!)

·        No time to pick up something, make something, can’t afford it, or you forgot?  Come anyway…we likely have you covered.
·        The most important part is just getting a chance to relax a bit and visit with others you’ll be spending a lot of Monday nights with!  LOL

THANK YOU in advance for helping get the New Year started in a warmer way than the weather outside! J

 Music Selections for Pops Concert:

Walt considered a wide variety of music and some of his selections have already arrived!  What fun it will be to have some of these pieces ready to “pop” into your black notebooks that first evening:

  • Summertime
  • Theme from New York New York
  • Another Opnin, Another Show
  • You'll Never Walk Alone
  • Get Me to the Church on Time (T/B)
  • Danny Boy (S/S/A)
  • With a Little Bit of Luck (TB)
  • Over the Rainbow  (TB)
  • Singing in the Rain
  • Others coming or being created as we speak:
  • Selections from Gilbert & Sullivan
Featuring The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, and Pirates of Penzance
  • Orinoco Flow (Celtic Women) (SSA)
We will be keeping the cost at $20.00 for registration and music once again with a $7.00 charge for the CD that will follow just like last session.  IF you'd like to pay it all together, you are welcome to or you can wait and pay for your CD in about three weeks.  Your folders with your music and name tags will be ready at my downstairs table when you arrive.
  • Make checks payable to Lebanon Lutheran Church.
  • IF you'd like to pay a little at a time, that is ok too...no problem.  Make it $9.00 a month if that helps. NO ONE will be denied the opportunity to receive music and participate because their budget is tight.  We've all been there, some of us still are.
  • IF your email, address, phone number(s) or other information has changed PLEASE fill out a new registration form so I can make the corrections on our Master List.
  • IF you are new to Chorale, I would appreciate it if you would fill out a registration form when you arrive and/or pick up your music.  THANKS!!!

The Finale...personal this time:

Thank you for the new members some of you are discovering.  Just encourage them to come to the first rehearsal and give it a try.  They do not have to pay for their music at that time...they can "try out the evening" and see if it is something they will like to do.  Remind them we do offer CDs to help with practice if they are uncertain about reading music, etc and there are always members willing to help.

Stay safe, be warm and have a wonderful weekend everyone.  I am looking forward to seeing you at our first rehearsal!

Hugs,

Donalee

A CHRISTMAS TAPESTRY 2010 POSTERS:

It is possible that posters for our Christmas concert will be available for you to take on Monday evening.  Walt has really been working diligently to get the new poster created and to the printer so we can get our advertising out there into the community ASAP.   He also finished the smaller postcards and they will be ready by our next rehearsal on Nov. 1.

I will get one up on the Pitkin?s Board downtown Whitehall to kick this off.  THINK about one or two places you could post one.   It would wonderful if you had some places in mind that you would like to take posters.  If people are willing to get them to outlying areas too?GREAT!

 THANK YOU!

Sponsorship Forms:

Joy has prepared our new sponsorship forms for this session and I will have them available for you this week.  We are trying to keep from having the program done in the wee hours prior to the concert, so I am setting the absolute final day as Monday, November 30.  You?ll have five weeks to invite and/or gather sponsors.  This is usually the one thing that has kept the programs from being prepared earlier because the comments have to be placed in the program.  We are really trying to get things organized, running more smoothly and in a timely manner.  Everything you can do to help counts too!

For those new to Chorale, here?s a sample form.  We hope that friends, family, businesses, church groups, work groups, etc. or even yourself will make a donation to the Chorale as a sponsor.  There will be a more complete explanation in Tuesday?s notes and briefly at Monday night?s rehearsal.

 The Finale:

We cannot change our past.  We cannot change the fact that people act in a certain way.  We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.
Charles R. Swindoll, American Writer and Clergyman, 1934

Many of us have been dealt a hand with which we could have folded the cards and given up.  Why bother?  Why try?  But instead, we relied on our friends and families, along with our positive attitudes to see us through and make things as good as they can possibly be.  We can do the same for this changing Chorale.

I have heard you and the choir sounds even more amazing than last spring!  You are blending, responding, lifting your heads up and following Walt more closely, noticably working hard on learning your parts and sharing your feelings through your words and body language.  Each evening we see an attitude of pride, accomplishment, and dedicated effort. WOW!  No wonder Walt is thinking ahead with new goals for this group.  He?s had the experience of working with large choirs and is seeing things in us that excite him.  What a compliment that is!

We're not perfect? no group is.  But we are getting a reputation as a very fine choir and one worth taking a trip to the beautiful White Lake area to hear. Your attitude is what will make or break any and all concerts we have.  If you are out there telling people how wonderful we sound, how delighted you are to be a member, how wonderful it will be for them to come and hear us, and how delighted you are that they are coming?then we are set.

Your enthusiasm and positive attitude along with word of mouth is THE best advertising one can ask for!  So I sincerely hope you will all take those positive attitudes out there along with your own enthusiasm and excitement and encourage everyone you know, and even those you don't, to enjoy our beautiful musical Christmas gift this season.  Because?.

If we are excited, they WILL come!?

Looking forward to spending a Great Pumpkin evening with you on Monday! See you then!

Donalee
